East Lyme - A corrections officer at York Correctional Institution in Niantic was assaulted Thursday afternoon, according to union officials.

Luke Leone, a Corrigan correction officer who serves as president of Local 1565 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, said the female corrections officer entered the cell of an inmate living in a mental health housing at about noon to conduct a strip search.

As the corrections officer entered the cell, the inmate allegedly jumped from her bunk and elbowed the officer, who then struck her head on the wall. According to the union, the inmate punched and kicked the officer, who staggered from the cell and passed out.

The officer was sent to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital yesterday, where union officials said she was treated for a head injury.

Kelly Anthony, hospital spokesman, said the corrections officer was released from the hospital Thursday night. Officials said the officer has not yet returned to work and has been asked to follow up with a neurologist.
