Female Officers Killed In The Line Of Duty

Corrections Officer Susan Louise Canfield  was killed in the line of duty on September 24, 2007.  Officer Canfield worked for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for seven years.  Two inmates were working with more than 70 other inmates outside and one of the inmates pulled a male corrections officer from the horse and took his weapons.  The two inmates stole a truck and ran over Officer Canfield.  Canfield was on horseback and trying to apprehend the two escapees.  Both inmates were captured and are in custody.

The following information was compiled by the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund for the IAWIC.

Anna Hart
A County Jail Matron for Hamilton County, Ohio, died on 07/24/1916 after being ambushed.  Jail Matron Hart was walking through a section of the jail she believed to be secure.  An inmate struck her in the head with an iron bedpost in an attempt to secure her keys and escape.  Anna Hart is the first known female law enforcement officer to be killed in the line of duty. 

Mary Davis
A Matron for the Wilmington, Delaware Police Department for fourteen years, was beaten to death by a female inmate who escaped on 5/11/1924. 
 

Lucille Helm
A Matron for the Madera County, California, Sheriffs Department for one year, died in an accident while transporting a female mental patient on 7/03/1959.


Phyllis M. Myers
Matron Myers, Matron for Niagara County (New York) for twenty-seven years, was smothered to death by two prisoners while escorting another prisoner to the cell block on 06/15/1970. 

Alice Mae Moran
Matron for Josephine County, Oregon, was killed in an airplane crash on 11/17/1971 while transporting witnesses for trial.  

Marta Shanaman
Police Matron for the Detroit, Michigan Police Department for fifteen years, was killed on 12/12/1971 while handling a prisoner.  The Matron was shot by a visitor assisting in an escape of a prisoner.  

Pauline Stewart
A Parole Officer in the West Virginia Division of Parole for four years, was stabbed to death while conducting a check on a parolee at his home on 8/1/1977.  The suspect was convicted of first degree murder.


Donna Alice Payant
A Correctional Officer for the New York State Department of Correctional Services, was killed on 5/15/1981.  CO Payant received a call to report to the hospital corridor.  The next day her body was found in a plastic bag at a landfill.  A doctor who assisted in convicting suspect Lemuel Smith of murder read about Officer Payant's death and called prison officials to see if Smith, who was serving two life sentences, was a prisoner at the same facility.  Forensic evidence proved that Smith had strangled and sexually brutalized Officer Payant. Lemuel was sentenced to a third life sentence.

Frieda King
A Corrections Employee for the Illinois Department of Corrections, was stabbed by an inmate and died on 02/08/1983.

Patricia Ross
A Corrections Employee for the Kentucky State Penitentiary, was beaten to death with an industrial size can opener by an inmate in the dining room on 03/01/1984. Patricia Ross, a Food Service Instructor, had refused the advances made by the inmate. 

Minnie R. Houston
A Correctional Officer for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for five years, was supervising six inmates who were cleaning fish in the dining hall.  Officer Houston was stabbed 15 times with a fillet knife by an inmate who was serving time for murder and died on 6/03/1985.

Maureen Callanan
A Correctional Officer for Nassau County, New York, for six years, died in an accident while transporting prisoners on 12/12/1986. 


Josephine Birdene McCallum
A Correctional Officer for the Michigan Department of Corrections for six years, was found raped, strangled, and beaten in a stairwell on 3/24/1987. The attacker was later found guilty and sentenced to prison for first degree murder. 


Beverly Jo Taylor
A Correctional Officer for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction for six years, Officer Taylor was found decapitated in the bathroom of the facility on 6/07/1990. 

Judith Ann Henkel
Correctional Officer Henkel, of the California Department of Corrections, immediately started to run to the scene when the alarms sounded that a prison fight among the inmates had erupted.  Oh her way she had a heart attack and died on 02/04/1995. 

Ineasie Maxie Baker
A Youth Counselor for the California Department of Youth Authority for eleven years, was beaten and stabbed to death 08/09/1996 by an inmate who was attempting to escape.  The inmate then threw her body in a trash bin.  Baker's body was found two days later in a landfill twenty miles from the facility. 

Shirlene A. Jenkins
A Corrections Officer for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction for three years, died of a heart attack on 02/11/1997 shortly after assisting four other Corrections Officers in using physical force to prevent an inmate from harming himself.

Mylene G. Zalar
A Correctional Officer for the California Department of Corrections for eight years, died on 09/11/1997 en route with Officer Paul Beridon to pick up inmates for transport.

Shannon Cuddington Smith
A Corrections Officer for the North Carolina Department of Corrections for four years, was struck and killed while supervising a crew on U.S. Interstate 70 on 11/09/1999.

Teresia Wheeler
A Correctional Officer for the Alabama Department of Corrections for two years, died of a heart attack on 10/01/2001 while participating in a required physical run at the Academy.

Darla Kay Lathrem
A Correctional Officer for the Florida Department of Corrections, for one year, Officers Lathrem was supervising a group of inmates who beat her to death with a sledge hammer in an escape attempt on 06/11/2003.
