There are no definitive statistics available
regarding this query. However, according to
staff at the American Correctional Association (http://www.aca.org/),
there are approximately 90,000 female
correctional officers employed by state, local,
and juvenile correctional facilities in the
United States.
We did a further check using more detailed
statistics through NCJRS and according to the
Census of State and Federal Correctional
Facilities, 2000 (http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/pub/pdf/csfcf00.pdf)
there were 141,727 female correctional officers
employed in Federal, State, and private
facilities at midyear 2000.
As an aside, according to the Sourcebook of
Criminal Justice Statistics 2003 (http://www.albany.edu/sourcebook/pdf/t1108.pdf),
with data provided by the Federal Bureau of
Prisons, 2,008 female correctional officers were
employed by the BOP as of January 2004.
