Number of Female Correctional Officers

How Many Female Correctional Officers Work in the United States?

Answer provided by the U.S. Department of Justice, National Institute of Justice

There are no definitive statistics available regarding this query. However, according to staff at the American Correctional Association (http://www.aca.org/), there are approximately 90,000 female correctional officers employed by state, local, and juvenile correctional facilities in the United States.

We did a further check using more detailed statistics through NCJRS and according to the Census of State and Federal Correctional Facilities, 2000 (http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/pub/pdf/csfcf00.pdf) there were 141,727 female correctional officers employed in Federal, State, and private facilities at midyear 2000.

As an aside, according to the Sourcebook of Criminal Justice Statistics 2003 (http://www.albany.edu/sourcebook/pdf/t1108.pdf), with data provided by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, 2,008 female correctional officers were employed by the BOP as of January 2004.
