Spouses of Correctional Officers

From the wife of an officer at Attica State Prison, New York:

I worry every day when my husband leaves the house because you never know what is going to happen.  The fact that he works at Attica, where a major riot occurred, weighs heavy on my mind.  You can be a great, experienced, and diligent officer but you never know if something will happen. It is out of your control to some extent.

The fact that there is no real contact with the outside world while he is at work is fearful.  You really don't know what is going on "behind those walls" all day.

Most of the time my husband does not share any stories about work. He feels it is better the least I know. More ammunition for me to worry about!! I agree with him to some degree but need to know some information so that I know what/how he is feeling.

Just a few days ago he was assaulted by an inmate with a TV. The guy went off and was flailing a TV around while holding the cord trying to hit him. He actually got hit in the arm before he finally subdued the guy. He has a cut and a bruise. How scary is that?  It goes to show you that no matter how much time you have on the job, things will inevitably still happen. As we all know, it is a very dangerous, life threatening job.

If there is one thing I learned it is that anything can and will happen at any time. You can only hope they are alert, aware and educated enough on how to handle the situation properly and safely WHEN it does occur.

As he leaves each morning I say a little prayer that he is safe and sound all day and when he arrives back home at the end of his day, I give a sigh of relief and thank God he has returned safe and sound.
