Correctional Officers Speak About Sexual Harassment by Inmates
  • At my institution where I work in California, the male wards repeatedly expose their genitals, masterbate, gas us, and try to grab our buttocks and breasts. We have reported the problem over and over again, but our supervisors haven’t done anything.

  • I work in a male institution in California, it is illegal for your supervisors to not act on the information if you are offended by the actions and being assaulted by being gassed! I knew coming into this job several years ago what I was getting in to...I have had several of those experiences also, I dealt with them immediately. Inmates are to be placed in Ad-Seg for such behavior and receive a Rules Violation Report. If they are "repeat" offenders they can be prosecuted in court also. We are not there to be harrassed by inmates or wards, we are there to do our jobs! When it happened to me, my partner and I had a talk with inmate...it never happened again. I do understand that Juveniles respond differently...there is an extreme lack of respect! Good luck!

  • I work at an all male facility here in Virginia. Although I have never been touched, I have had inmates expose themselves to me. I don't know how it works in other states, but here we can take "street charges" on them for indecent exposure. I took an inmate to "street" court here in my county about a year and a half ago. I lost my case, but once the inmates found out that they could potentially be found guilty and end up a registered sex offender for "gunning", I have not had one problem since.
